Learn how to map a 2D texture onto a sphere in Fusion 360, using spherical projection and adjusting texture scales to create stunning images like Mars and the Moon.
[0:01] In this video I want to demonstrate how to map a 2D texture onto a sphere in Fusion 360.
[0:10] Let’s create a sphere.
[0:17] Now we need to change the projection type.
[0:22] Right click on the sphere and select “Texture Map Controls”.
[0:32] Change to spherical projection and on the axis selection pick the Z-axis
[0:43] Now we can apply an appearance.
[0:48] Right click and choose appearance.
[0:55] Edit the appearance.
[0:59] And select “Advanced”.
[1:01] In the parameters for the colour use this dropdown and select image.
[1:10] Now pick an image for the texture.
[1:15] It’s important that the aspect ration of your image is 2 to 1.
[1:22] ie it is twice as wide as it is high.
[1:27] Let’s select our Mars texture.
[1:31] You can apply our current appearance to the sphere to see what it looks like.
[1:42] You can see that it’s mapped the texture but it’s done it an incorrect way.
[1:50] To fix that we use this drop down and click “Edit Image”.
[1:57] In the scale section, we need to change this so the width is our circumference and the height
[2:07] is half our circumference.
[2:09] You need to click this button here to unlock the aspect ratio.
[2:16] Then you can type in our circumference and half our circumference.
[2:24] Now you can see that our mars image is mapped correctly.
[2:29] Click done and click apply.
[2:36] And our mars texture is done.
[2:41] That should be it, you can find lots of textures online.
[2:46] Search for spherical texture on google image search.
[2:51] Let’s demonstrate that.
[2:53] We can edit appearance, go advanced and pick a different image.
[3:08] Let’s try a moon texture.
[3:13] So that’s our moon applied.
