You know Christmas is here when a big box arrives from PCBWay.

It’s a big box - from PCBWay

Lot’s of nice goodies, and a really amazing surprise!

It’s partner of the year award! This is really solid chunky bit of aluminium, thank you PCB Way! They’ve been a great supported of the channel over the past few year.

Award Winning!

I’d also like to give a big shout out all my Patreons and GitHub sponsors - it’s really appreciated.

This has been a pretty jam packed year.

We started off playing with very small ESP32 boards, SDCards, Audio and TFT screens.

We made a brief foray into nickel plating, initially trying it with PCBs and then having a go at nickel plating 3D prints. I quickly realised that I was way out of my depth with this and we got back to more PCBs and messing around with addressable LEDs.

It was around this time that full colour silk screen printing started to become widely available and I leapt at the chance to try it out.

That took me to the biggest project of the year - the ESP32 Rainbow - I’m actually taking this from proof of concept all the way through to a live product.

It’s up on Crowd Supply and it’s fully funded now. But don’t worry, you can still pre-order.

ESP32 Rainbow - on Crowd Supply right now!

We won’t actually be shipping until April 2025. It’s been a fascinating experience going from prototype to product including things like CE testing - which is something I’ve never done before.

My little board getting zapped…

This project will take up a lot of time in Q1 and Q1 but I’m still planning on getting some interesting videos out of the door, so stay tuned - 2025 is going to be equally exciting!

Thanks to everyone for watching an supporting - I’ll see you all next year!

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and looking forward to a prosperous New Year!

Old school tape loading - If you're anything like me, the nostalgic screeches of ZX Spectrum games loading might bring a smile to your face. I've taken a trip down memory lane by working on my own tribute to this iconic machine—introducing the ESP32 Rainbow. It’s on Crowd Supply, where we're closing in on full funding! This blog post walks you through the journey of harnessing audial data to load games directly into my emulator—faster and more reliable than those temperamental cassette decks from our childhood.
Esp32 s3 zx spectrum - In a bid to quench my nostalgia and flex my ESP32 chops, I managed to get a ZX Spectrum emulator running on my ESP32-TV board! Then, spurred on by PCBWay's new full color silk screen service, I pursuit the audacious task of recreating the ZX Spectrum's iconic keyboard. It's been quite the joyride - wrangling touch pins, shrinking screens and creating a thing of beauty on PCB. It's not quite ready for the spotlight, but keep an eye on my newsletter for more eagerly-awaited updates. It's like the Spectrum is reborn!
Look at my shiny crystal balls - Just upgraded my basic AliExpress crystal balls with some tech wizardry - I've thrown in an ESP32-S3-MINI, a mic, and made them battery powered. Thanks to WLED software, they're now smart and responsive! Shared the KiCAD project for fellow tinkerers. Check out my video to see these balls in action!
ESP32 TV Version 3 - In the latest board revision, I've successfully resolved some key issues, including a USB interface conflict between the USB2244 and the ESP32 and a risky battery charging mistake—no more direct USB 5V to the battery! Plus, I managed to wrap this up without any clumsy bodge wiring. I've even introduced a new feature: a microphone is now on board, setting the stage for some exciting future projects. Stay tuned for what's coming!
Dave come see - it's beautiful man - Hey folks, I revisited my flame lamp project from 2020 and gave it a serious upgrade - we're talking a leap from 300 to a whopping 1024 LEDs thanks to these nifty flexible WS2812 panels. I've kitted it out with a versatile PCB from my Crystal Balls project, tackled power injection challenges and kept things cool with a current-limiting power supply. I had to wrestle with 3D printing and getting the panels to behave inside the lamp's tube, but the end result? A mesmerizing blaze of colors with gorgeous fire effect, all orchestrated by the WLED software. It's like my very own Phoenix rising from the 2020 ashes. Curious to see this electronic inferno come to life? Check out my videos for the full, fiery scoop!

Award winning channel? You tell me... - Christmas has arrived in style with a surprise Partner of the Year award from PCBWay! It's been an amazing year packed with projects, from dabbling in nickel plating to diving into full-color silk screen printing. The highlight? Taking the ESP32 rainbow from concept to a fully funded venture on Crowd Supply. With big plans for 2025 and exciting videos on the way, the future looks bright. Wishing everyone a merry Christmas and an exciting New Year!
Plans for 2023 - Let's Make Some Magic! (projects, not smoke...) - Recapping an incredible year of project experiments and tech videos, with plans for upcoming projects in 2022 covering ESP32 audio, Raspberry Pi, DIY microscopy, 3D printing robotics, PCB motors, haptic knobs, and more. Dive into the world of DIY electronics and discover endless possibilities!
ESP32-TV Version 3 - Is it done? - In today's project update, I'm excited to share that my ESP32-TV boards, fresh from PCBWay, are operating flawlessly! We've successfully dealt with the USB2244 conflict with the ESP32, and the battery charging issue is now a thing of the past. We've also made some awesome additions like a microphone to our board. The real MVP though, is the USB2244 chip that’s given us significantly improved read/write speeds - making it perfect for handling video files. Next on the agenda, figuring out a solution for the non-standard display connector. As ever, there’s progress, there’s problems, and there's David Bowie animated gifs!
Lots of Stuff - And a NEW PCB! It's a rare mailbag video. - In today's episode, I'm unboxing some goodies from PCB way - my super tiny esp32 breakout boards, which I'm planning to use to recreate a mini TV complete with speakers and a display. Also received some convenient adapter boards for easier testing. Excited to explore a new Arduino Nano esp32 based on a different, tinier module, and contrasting it with other products like the Tiny Pico. Also up for testing is a new mini wear electronic load compared to my old one, and an ATX power adapter for more USB ports. I'll be testing power banks, playing with inexpensive yellow displays and nunchucks for fun gaming projects, and testing out an RGB bead curtain with hackable possibilities. Also, under my ongoing experiments is a Raspberry Pi zero, turning into a 'Doom' playing device with added sound and game controllers. Finally, an air quality measuring device for detecting air particles, CO2 levels, humidity, temperature and other parameters is up for exploration as well. A whole array of fun projects queued up, so stay tuned!
But does it run DOOM? ESP32 ZX Spectrum update - All right, it's time for an update on my ESP Rainbow, the ZX Spectrum emulator with stunning full-color silk screen printing. I've been testing the latest boards, and PCB Way did a fantastic job. The enhancements include upgraded firmware, a 128k ZX Spectrum emulator, and a new 2-watt speaker replacing the old 7-watt buzzer. You can enjoy great sound with PWM and even play 128k games like The Never Ending Story. I've also added a snapshot feature and ported my video player over. Hardware upgrades include new capacitors and a slick power control chip for seamless battery and USB mode switching. We're gearing up for a commercial release, hopefully by Christmas, so stay tuned. And yes, it does run Doom! [Laughter]

A collection of slightly mad projects, instructive/educational videos, and generally interesting stuff. Building projects around the Arduino and ESP32 platforms - we'll be exploring AI, Computer Vision, Audio, 3D Printing - it may get a bit eclectic...
